My Photography Style, Explained
BRIGHT, VIBRANT, AND TRUE-TO-LIFE
I describe my photography style as bright, vibrant, and true-to-life. But that’s not exactly a “style” you see when searching for a photographer, so you might be wondering what that means, and what kind of images you can expect. Here’s a little break down of what I aspire my photographs to look like.
Bright. When I say ‘bright’, I mean that I like my images to have as much light as possible. I tend to set my camera with a shallow depth of field. This both lets more light into my camera and gives a bokeh effect. That just means that the background will be out of focus, and it makes the subject pop off the background. This strategy is used frequently in portrait photography to distinguish the focus of the image, usually you, from the background.
Vibrant. I like a lot of color in my photographs; I don’t like to wash out colors or have a completely white sky- if I can help it! So even though I like a ton of light in my pictures, I don’t consider myself a ‘light and airy’ photographer. I like to have a little more ‘pop’ and color to my images.
True-to-life. While I enhance and color correct, I don’t like to stray too far from what the scene really looked like. That means if the day is dark and dreary, I will do my best to get the brightest images I can, but they will still reflect the day and how it truly looked. I do try to keep colors as close to accurate as possible, so the colors you pick out are still reflected after editing.
If you want a really bright look, like the majority of my portraits that you see in my portfolio, you may have to be flexible with dates to ensure we don’t get an overcast, dreary day. That being said, I don’t like to cancel or reschedule too early- the forecast isn’t always accurate, and you never know what kind of magic can happen if you stick it out!
These are a few examples of when the weather didn’t exactly cooperate, we were able to make magic happen!
All of these sessions went from rainy, to sunny, to rainbows! And even though it was a little crazy, it was a blast to photograph in such crazy conditions- and I love when my clients are willing to just see what happens during their session! Of course, for severe weather, safety comes first- we will always reschedule if there are dangerous conditions. But for mild storms and rain, it can be a lot of fun to just see what happens!
Above are a few darker images- these two days were cold and wet! The first was snowy- we had a beautiful snowy engagement session, complete with games to warm the kids up! The second images were from a wet fall day- we had fun in the rain using umbrellas, but unfortunately there wasn’t a break in the rain at all. These were both still gorgeous sessions, and we still managed to play and have fun. So even though the weather didn’t fully cooperate, we were able to leave with beautiful portraits!

I hope this explains my style a little better! If you like what you see, reach out so schedule your next session today!
