Metrics Martial Arts~ Adult Class
I got to spend another day at Metrics Martial Arts in Appleton, Wisconsin!
I absolutely love hanging out during Eric’s classes- and even better, I get to document all of them! I was able to photograph all three classes offered at Metrics Martial Arts- Adult, Youth ages 9-13 and Youth ages 5-8. This post is going to focus on the adult class, so be sure to check out the youth class blog too!
My favorite part of getting to witness these classes is the energy. While martial arts gyms are generally high-energy, the atmosphere at Metrics is so unique. It’s definitely high energy, but it’s also so relaxed- everyone is equal here. Martial Arts focuses highly on a rank system and can be inundated with toxic masculinity, and those who are either just starting out, females, or others who just don’t fit into a “macho” guy mold, can feel unwelcome or awkward in the environment.
That’s not the case here! Everyone is welcome and it’s so easy to see the camaraderie here and how it extends to every student of the class- not just for those who are long-time members or the more advanced students. There’s a definite sense of teamwork here; everyone is able to teach and learn from each other in a collaborative way. Each person is in a different level of learning, yet they can all work together to challenge each other and elevate their knowledge and expertise.
And of course, it’s just fun to watch other people spar and practice take-downs! Some of my favorite pictures I captured were the ones where I nearly got myself taken down too! I was trying to stay out of the way, but I still had to be where the action was- and it was well worth the potential danger of taking a foot to the face or have two people come hurtling at me at once! Luckily, I was quick enough on my feet to keep myself, and my camera, safe.
Enjoy a few of my favorites! And if you’re in the Appleton, Wisconsin area and are looking for a fun way to stay active, check out Metrics Martial Arts!
